One of the joys of being involved with this program and though I hesitate to use the term jazz scene is the opportunity to see a group come together, coalesce around an initial idea, and watch that idea grow into a fully developed quartet that produces outstanding music. This week, it’s the Tommy Lehman Quartet, a quartet that debuted at a wine bar in the spring of 2021 with a general intent of exploring existing material and indeed writing new material around jazz from the early 1970s.
And that idea grew and grew into what you’ll hear this week, which is a roaring, sold out January 28th, 2023 performance celebrating the release of their first EP, Uplift. Featuring Smokeface on bass, Andrew Senpai on keyboards, Gabe Jones on drums and Tommy Lehman on trumpet, it’s the Tommy Lehman Quartet – Live at the Bop Stop.
